Symptoms of ListeriosisThe most common way to get listeriosis is by eating food contaminated with Listeria bacteria. Women who are infected during pregnancy can pass Listeria to their fetus or newborn baby.Usual symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, and an upset stomach. Mild illnesses are generally not diagnosed. More serious infections cause severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions. Anyone with potential illness is encouraged to contact their health care provider.
Consumer GuidanceConsumers are encouraged to check ready-to-eat (not raw) packaged meat and poultry products purchased from June 19 - October 8 to ensure they do not have recalled products at home. Some of the recalled foods are designed to be heat and serve—such as ready-to-heat meals—and might be frozen. Other recalled food items are fresh—such as salads and wraps—that might be close to expiration dates or already expired.
Consumers with food safety questions can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or send a question via email to [email protected].
